Rockfall protection systems are a key element in designing and maintanence of infrastructure network and have a significant influence on the level of security during the exploitation period.
Considering how they function, these systems can be active and passive.
- Passive protection does not disturb the rockfall, but it retains it and prevents any damages on the infrastructure, and also it protects its users. Passive systems are embankments for rockfall protection, barriers and double twisted wire mesh.
Active protection prevents the tearing and fall of rocks and stones. Active system is a mesh with metal wire when different types of wire mesh are combined with cords that are anchored into the rocks.

Double twisted wire mesh is produced in different wire diameters, different opening dimensions and levels of corrosion protection; important advantage of this mesh is the fact that if breaking of the wire occurs, it will not cause the wire to untangle, which is the case with standard wire.
- NEA panel – made of metal cords tied togather with a special metal node and of excellent strength;
- SteelGrid® – combination of double twisted wire mesh with metal cords in the zones of double twist;
- Barriers made of double twisted wire mesh in combination with metal cords. This product is used for retaining and protection from rockfalls and snow avalanches. It can withstand the energy from 250 to 3000 KJ.
- Barriers in the form of reinforced embankments with modular system Ecomesh® that are mostly used for protection of very large and difficult-to-access slopes.
